Safran Electronics & Defense is a company founded on the mastery of key technologies in the service of sovereignty. Combining human and technological intelligence, it develops products and services that enable observation, decision-making and guidance for the aerospace, defense and space markets. Safran Electronics&Defense is one of the world’s top 3 suppliers of inertial navigation systems and resilient PNT for aeronautical, naval and land applications, and number 1 in Europe for optronic systems and tactical UAV systems. Present on every continent through Safran’s international network, Safran Electronics&Defense and its subsidiaries employ more than 12,000 people in Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific, North America and South America.
A leading player in optronic and inertial navigation systems, Safran Electronics & Defense equips more than 1,000 ships and submarines in 40 navies around the world. Whether surface ships, submarines or merchant navies, Safran provides global or modular solutions adapted to all types of threats and platforms: navigation, warning, surveillance, reconnaissance, engagement and self-defense.
In collaboration with integrators, Safran participates in major naval programs in France and abroad, such as the Barracuda, Scorpène or KS-III class submarines, FREMM frigates, BPCs or the Charles-de-Gaulle aircraft carrier.
Safran Electronics has been providing passive infrared detection and observation/targeting solutions for over 90 years. To date, more than 500 surface vessels have been equipped with high-precision intervention capabilities against maritime or airborne targets and terrorist threats, thanks to our optronic fire control systems or IRST (infrared search & track). Safran has combined its experience in naval and airborne sighting systems to bring very long-range identification capability to surface vessels. Paseo XLR incorporates the mature optronic modules of the Euroflir410, such as all its high-definition sensors associated with the multi-spectral telescope, and now makes it possible to bring identification to the horizon on naval systems in a reduced volume. Vampir NG enables the detection of airborne threats at very long distances 24/7, while remaining a completely passive system. Combined with the Paseo XLR, the Safran solution can detect and identify long-range threats, giving the crew more time to prepare for threat management.
For over 70 years, Safran Electronics & Defense has been supplying inertial navigation systems for surface ship and submarine applications. Today, its solutions are installed on more than 1,000 ships in service and on order worldwide, and Safran’s Sigma40 systems are used by more than 40 navies worldwide. Safran completes its range of inertial navigation systems for surface vessels with Argonyx systems, and for subsea applications with Black-Onyx systems. Black-Onyx enables extreme diving missions and offers an unrivalled level of autonomous navigation performance. Naturally discreet and effective in environments where GNSS is not available, these systems are based on the disruptive inertial technology of the HRG Crystal hemispheric resonator gyroscope, a Safran-patented innovation already widely deployed. These inertial systems represent a major step forward in terms of operational efficiency, product integration and cost of ownership, and are the lightest, most reliable and robust on their markets.
