La Ciotat Shipyards is a Société Publique Locale (SPL). Its shareholders are the Département des Bouches-du-Rhône, the Métropole Aix-Marseille-Provence, the Région Sud and the Ville de La Ciotat. Its corporate purpose is the sustainable relocation of industrial and maritime activities to the La Ciotat shipyard zone. Its strategy is based on the development of shipbuilding capacity (#bigger) to serve the development of an industrial ecosystem focused on excellence (#better), while respecting the site’s human and natural environment (#friendlier). This strategy is underpinned by strong industrial partnerships forged over time with key operators who contribute to the investments made on the site, such as Monaco Marine, MB92 La Ciotat and iXblue.


The main activity consists in refitting yachts of all sizes, with a specialization in units over 50 m (around 100 are welcomed each year). This activity has developed thanks to the presence of a remarkable port infrastructure. In addition to 1,600 m of quays for industrial use, the site offers a simultaneous dry-docking capacity for some 50 vessels of all sizes, thanks to a 2,000 t elevator (17 berths), a 200 m large form (2 to 4 berths), a large 600 t gantry crane (6 berths) and a 300 t strap elevator (24 berths). These infrastructures will be completed in September 2022 by a new 4,300 t boat elevator (7 berths). The iXblue group also produces and integrates high-tech detection and positioning equipment for ships.

Special expertise in lifting and dry-docking large yachts

La Ciotat Shipyards has developed particular expertise in the lifting and dry-docking of large yachts, which have certain specific structural characteristics and require special attention. This expertise is expressed both in the lifting of vessels with particular geometries (sailing yachts or multihulls) and large vessels. In September 2022, the company will deliver its “Atlas-4300 tons” platform, designed to dry-dock giant yachts. It will be served by a boat elevator with a 100 m * 20 m platform and a lifting capacity of 4,300 tonnes, custom-designed to meet yacht requirements and incorporating a number of technological innovations. When delivered, this will be the 2nd most powerful elevator in the world in its category, after the one in Barcelona, and will offer even more advanced functionalities. One of the special features of this equipment also lies in the integration, at the design stage, of technical devices aimed at minimizing its environmental footprint (electrical connection, water treatment, artificial nursery).

Industrial ecosystem of excellence

La Ciotat Shipyards is working with other local players and companies to create an industrial ecosystem of excellence that will set the La Ciotat site apart from competing shipyards. This approach is reflected not only in the joint management of environmental projects, but also, and above all, in a rigorous selection strategy for companies allowed to set up in La Ciotat. The latter must demonstrate particular expertise in their field. Over the past few months, LCS has been paying particular attention to attracting companies with the know-how needed to support the maritime industry’s transition to a blue economy. La Ciotat Shipyards is also a member of the HYNOVAR ecosystem in the green hydrogen sector.
