BLUEFINS
Founded in 2021, BLUEFINS develops biomimetic propulsion systems for the decarbonization of maritime transport. We mainly target shipowners and charterers, to whom we offer a reduction in their fuel consumption – and therefore associated GHGs – of 20%, and an ROI of less than three years. Our solution, developed with the support of Ifremer, consists of an articulated and controlled hydrofoil, which transforms the swell energy transmitted to the ship into propulsive force. It is ideally suited to both new-build and existing vessels.
As a “fablight” company, we master the complete engineering of our solutions:
– studies of potential gains and performance, depending on the vessel, its operational profile, and its energy requirements;
– system design and sizing, according to customer objectives;
– complete layout for manufacturing;
– development of piloting algorithms;
– certification.
Our team is made up of a dozen engineers (hydrodynamicists, naval architects, mechanical designers, electronics engineers). We develop our own modeling and simulation tools (digital twins).
We rely on partners (specialized boilermakers, shipyards) to build and integrate our systems on our customers’ ships, both new-build and refit.
Our articulated hydrofoil is positioned on the rear deck of ships. It is sized according to the ship’s characteristics and operational profile. Propulsion (or electricity generation) is maximized by steering pivot links, and controlling the foil’s angle of incidence in the swell.
This solution combines the advantages of performance (20% reduction in the ship’s fuel consumption), safety (liftable system), operability (attached to the stern of the ship, without taking up any deck space) and flexibility (new construction or refit, propulsion or power generation).
