France orders an additional defence and intervention frigate (FDI) from Naval Group

On 31 March 2026, the French Government defence procurement and technology agency (DGA) notified the order for the fifth FDI for the French Navy. Following the order of the fourth unit in December 2025, this order confirms the renewal and strengthening of France’s sovereign capabilities.

Built on Naval Group’s site in Lorient, these units will bring the total production of this series to nine frigates, alongside the four FDI frigates destined for the Hellenic Navy.

The FDI is a first-rank frigate designed for high-intensity combat on all seas of the globe. Evolutive and versatile, it possesses proven capabilities in all areas of combat (anti-aircraft, anti-submarine, anti-surface and asymmetric) to manage current and emerging threats.

Its compact layout and unique design make it perfectly suited to rough seas around the world. This ability was demonstrated during the sea trials of the Admiral Ronarc’h, whose crew was able to observe its aptitude in the face of a sea state 6 in the Atlantic Ocean.

This modern ship features advanced digital technologies allowing it to be operated with a reduced crew. With a high level of maintainability, the FDI ensures operational availability comparable to that of the multi-mission frigates (FREMM). Designed and built to NATO standards, it guarantees interoperability and connectivity between allied navies.
