Newcleo-Led Consortium Selected by Bpifrance to Develop the “n-Floating” Nuclear Project

The consortium bringing together Newcleo, Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, and ABMI Groupe has been selected under the “Supporting the decarbonisation of the French maritime sector” call-for-projects managed by Bpifrance. Awarded almost €1 million in funding, the work expected to run for 18 months aims to demonstrate the relevance and technical feasibility of the “n-Floating” project.

Floating nuclear power for maritime decarbonisation

The concept relies on a non-self-propelled floating unit housing multiple advanced modular reactors (AMR) of 200 MWe each (LFR-AS-200 technology). Leveraging proven practices from the maritime and offshore sectors for shipyard construction, the project aims to develop a standardised, competitive, and easily deployable solution.

This barge will deliver firm, low-carbon power to locations where land availability or grid constraints pose challenges. It will serve to supply isolated regions, coastal areas, or ports, while supporting energy-intensive industrial applications such as water desalination and the production of low-carbon fuels.

A Major Asset for the French Maritime Sector

Targeting industrial deployment by 2036, this project represents a strategic opportunity for the French maritime ecosystem. By combining French nuclear and maritime expertise, the n-Floating project contributes to strengthening the country’s industrial sovereignty and supports its ambitions in maritime decarbonisation.
