Naval Group and PhotonFirst partner on advanced fiber-optic structural health monitoring

On October 20, 2026, Naval Group and Dutch technology supplier PhotonFirst announced a technical partnership to evaluate the deployment of advanced fiber-optic sensing networks across surface combatants and submarines. The initiative aims to enhance real-time structural health monitoring (SHM) for naval vessels, thereby extending operational uptime and reducing overall lifecycle maintenance costs.

The agreement forms part of the industrial cooperation framework built by Naval Group Netherlands with the Dutch defense technological and industrial base (DTIB). By merging PhotonFirst’s specialized Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) optical technology with Naval Group’s naval architecture and platform integration capabilities, the project will demonstrate how embedded photonics can deliver continuous, high-precision diagnostics under harsh operational loading conditions.

From an engineering perspective, FBG-based sensing offers critical operational advantages over conventional electronic sensors in maritime environments. The optical fibers gather precise data on structural strain, thermal gradients, and material fatigue without generating or suffering from electromagnetic interference (EMI). Furthermore, optical systems resist harsh marine conditions, including deep-sea pressure and salt corrosion, while significantly reducing onboard cabling weight and installation complexity.

By generating real-time operational data, the platform health management system provides naval operators with predictive maintenance capabilities. This approach allows engineering teams to monitor structural integrity continuously, anticipate maintenance needs before critical thresholds are reached, and optimize vessel readiness. Managed through Naval Group Netherlands, the technology tested within this partnership is designed for integration into both submarine programs and a broad range of surface combatants.
