Everllence, ABB, and OceanWings join forces to develop sustainable propulsion concepts

On October 1, 2025, at GasTech 2025 in Milan, Everllence, ABB, and OceanWings signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop a sustainable propulsion concept combining Everllence’s and ABB’s DFE+ (Diesel-Electric with variable speed) system with OceanWings’ rigid wingsail technology.
This partnership aims to demonstrate the benefits of integrating hybrid electric propulsion with wind-assisted systems to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions while maintaining high operational performance.

Key advantages include:
– optimal engine efficiency even at partial loads,
– operational flexibility through multiple engines,
– compatibility with sustainable energy sources such as batteries and fuel cells,
– OceanWings’ Adaptive Trimming system, which continuously optimizes sail positioning based on each vessel’s aerodynamic profile.

LNG carriers spend about 70% of their time at sea — ideal conditions to harness the full potential of OceanWings rigid sails,” said Romain Grandsart, COO of OceanWings.
The initial scope of the collaboration will focus on developing a next-generation LNG carrier concept, with further applications expected in the cargo segment.
