EURONAVAL 2026: Photospace launches the RA480, its first ITAR-Free submarine navigation radar
A specialist in embedded equipment for naval defense, French SME Photospace is expanding its strategic product portfolio with the launch of the RA480. This system introduces a brand-new line of navigation radars specifically engineered to meet the stringent operational demands of submarine forces. It directly complements the company’s existing offerings in optronic mast subsystems and specialized naval antenna architectures.
Designed to operate under the extreme environmental and operational constraints of subsea missions, the RA480 incorporates ruggedized critical sub-assemblies to ensure maximum reliability. The radar’s mechanical and electronic systems are fully dimensioned to withstand immersion pressure, heavy shock, and continuous operational vibrations. Key structural elements include a reinforced antenna with integrated deflector and drive system, a high-durability power supply unit, a shock-absorbing mechanical interface, and hardened radiofrequency and processing boards. The entire assembly is housed within a spherical composite radome built to satisfy strict sealing and hydrostatic pressure specifications.
Built with modularity in mind, the RA480 can integrate a wide range of optional technologies based on customer requirements, including GNSS, AIS, VUHF, and direction-finding (DF) capabilities. Its mechanical chassis also features custom physical inserts to accommodate specific platform connectors.
A key competitive advantage for international markets, the RA480 navigation radar is guaranteed 100% ITAR Free. Its engineering relies exclusively on components exempt from U.S. defense export regulations, allowing Photospace to maintain complete sovereign control over its sales and export activities without third-party administrative constraints. First customer deliveries for this new submarine radar line are scheduled to begin in 2028.
Photospace’s technical teams will officially present the RA480 radar alongside their complete range of naval technologies at EURONAVAL 2026 in Paris from November 3 to 6 (Stand F66).
